TAMPA BAY • FEBRUARY 23-24 2026

This FINAL encore experience will be unlike any other. Because like everything we do, it's been "reimagined" from beginning to end. It's not a virtual or hybrid event. It's not a conference. It's not a seminar, a workshop, a meeting, or a symposium. And it's not your typical run-of-the-mill everyday event crammed with stages, keynote speeches, team-building exercises, PowerPoint presentations, and all the other conventional humdrum. Because it's up close & personal by design. Where conversation trumps presentation. And where authentic connection runs deep.

A Need to Rethink Bereavement Leave: Lessons from Around the World

Losing a loved one is an experience that reshapes our lives in profound ways, and the grief that follows is a journey with no set timeframe. In many countries, including the United States, bereavement leave policies often fall short of providing the necessary support for individuals navigating this challenging period. The standard bereavement leave in the U.S. typically ranges from 3 to 5 days, with some companies offering no provisions. This raises a critical question: Is it time to rethink and extend bereavement leave policies to better accommodate the complexities of grief?

My personal journey through grief began on February 20, 2022, when I lost my husband to multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer. Despite the foreknowledge of his illness and inevitable passing, nothing could have prepared me for the emotional and physical toll that grief would exact. As I embarked on the path of mourning, I also found myself overwhelmed by the myriad responsibilities that came with it.

One of the glaring issues with the current bereavement leave policies in the U.S. is their inadequacy in allowing individuals the time they need to grieve and manage the practical aspects of their loss.

The typical 3-5 days offered by employers do not provide sufficient time for someone to process their emotions, find closure, and handle the many arrangements and legal obligations that may arise after a loved one’s passing.

A significant aspect that must be considered is the funeral and memorial arrangements timeline. While a “standard” funeral can be organized in approximately two weeks, there are situations where the process may take longer. Factors such as the location and circumstances of the individual’s death can significantly impact the timeline. In my case, even though my husband was cremated per his wishes, it took a full month from the date of his passing until his remains were returned to me.

The complications extend further into legal matters related to the deceased’s estate. Even with a will in place, it took me five months to secure a probate hearing that would allow for the execution of my husband’s wishes. And this, my attorney assured me, was a relatively swift process. For individuals dealing with complex estates, including children, previous spouses, or contested wills, the timeline can be further extended, adding an additional layer of stress and uncertainty during an already trying time.

So, what can we learn from countries with more generous bereavement leave policies? In advanced nations such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European countries, bereavement leave is more substantial and backed by legal mandates. While the specific regulations vary, these countries generally provide up to two weeks of paid bereavement leave, allowing individuals the time they need to cope with their loss and manage practical affairs.

In Canada, for instance, employees are entitled to up to 10 days of unpaid bereavement leave for the death of a family member. In the United Kingdom, employees can take paid time off, typically up to two weeks, depending on their employer’s policy. The aim is to alleviate some of the immediate burdens that come with grief and allow individuals to heal.

The disparity in bereavement leave policies between the United States and these advanced nations highlights the need for a reevaluation of our approach to supporting grieving individuals. Extending bereavement leave and introducing legal requirements for it can help individuals like me navigate the complexities of grief and ensure that practical matters are addressed without added stress.

In conclusion, the current bereavement leave policies in the United States are inadequate for the profound and multifaceted experience of grief.

The emotional toll and the practical responsibilities that follow a loved one’s passing necessitate a more compassionate and comprehensive approach to bereavement leave.

Looking at the examples set by advanced countries, it is clear that extending and legally mandating bereavement leave can provide much-needed support to grieving individuals during one of life’s most challenging moments. It’s time to rethink and reform our approach to bereavement leave to better meet the needs of those who have lost a loved one.
