How open-minded are you, really? Do you find yourself locking down on traditions, doctrine, policy, and habits? Saying (or even thinking) things like, “This is the way I’ve always done things, and I’m not going to change now?”
What if Jesus has decided to just stay comfortable in heaven? To never come down to earth and experience something new so that He could provide a better hope and future for each of us? I don’t even want to think about that.
Jesus, thankfully, was open to change!
Lately I’ve been asking myself: How much progress am I holding up by staying locked down on practices that — in my mind — are the best for me, my family, and my business?
Sometimes the story we tell ourselves isn’t the story we’re meant to be writing.
I just changed a seven-year habit of writing a blog every seven days. I’d convinced myself that writing every week was mandatory because “That’s what bloggers are supposed to do.” Since backing away from my weekly writing commitment, I have become more productive than ever, overall. I’ve been able to work with a much clearer mind and way more energy. Now, instead of “having to” write, I can write when I’m excited to! I’d love for you to consider a few big benefits of making even a small change in your own life:
- Shaping your future builds your foundation and potential.
If you don’t take control of your own vision and drive towards your preferred future, you stand to lead a completely dull, extremely predictable, and patently uninteresting life. Not only that, you’ll fall behind. Seizing appropriate opportunities and learning even one new thing can lead you towards your vision and God-given potential.
- A new beginning builds your energy.
Each change is a turning page. You close one chapter and start another. Your open-mindedness to change will bring new choices for happiness and fulfillment. Change brings excitement and energy to your life. Forward progress is fun!
- Personal growth builds performance.
Nothing improves with just the passing of time. To get better, you need better inputs. Change! You grow and learn every time you change. You might fail when trying something new, but that drives learning as well. As you open your mind to change you break the chains of conventional thinking and go further in finding great solutions.
- A new friend builds your network of relationships.
Frequent change exposes you to new environments, new situations, and especially new people. Building relationships with new people will enrich both your network and your life. Plus, the more unique perspectives you come into contact with, the more you become more attractive to others as they experience your newly dynamic feedback on the best way forward.
- Humility builds character.
No human is perfect. No human has all the answers. People that pose to know it all cannot be trusted. Being open-minded and willing to change illustrates your vulnerability and willingness to learn from others. That will build trust with people – and with yourself – and enhance your personal character.
The Secret
Change can be scary. It is easier to be closed-minded and stay with what’s been comfortable in the past. I find the secret to being successful in change is to bring Jesus onto your team, as your change coach. Pray about what you need to change in your life in order to accelerate your progress towards your purpose and vision. Read His Word to allow God to speak to you and drive that necessary change in your life.
And then?
